Chapter 1. Introduction

Well, I am not always in front of my little Linux box. Sometimes, I get out of my house with my camera and go out in Paris streets to take photos. Many photos...

When this "collection" has been as huge as 3500 photos, mostly stored on little negatives, it was not possible to classify them correctly anymore. For that task, I needed a little help from my computer...

My first task was to provide a little scanner to my Linux box, smart enough to handle little negatives (24x36 mm). And scanning begun... My goal was not to produce high resolution images which could be printed directly from my computer, but just small resolution ones (like 800x600) which could be easily handled and were not too much "space consuming"...

After scanning (a lot !) and searching for a Linux tool to handle such a collection, I didn't find any tool corresponding to my needs... So I started to develop a new one, hoping other guys would be interested with it...

GNOME Photo Collector (from now called 'GPC') is born from this work. It's my first contribution to the world of Linux and GNOME applications, and also my first C and GTK+/GNOME development (at work, I have to work under Windows with VB :-((( ). GPC is a free software, developed and distributed under the GNU General Public Licence. You should see the COPYING file furnished with this application for more details on this licencing.

You should look at the GPC home page, at http://gpc.sourceforge.net to get GPC updates, source code and informations. Any feedback is REALLY welcome.
